The Legacy of Dadasaheb Phalke

Dadasaheb Phalke, originally named Dhundiraj Govind Phalke, was born on April 30, 1870, in Trimbak, Maharashtra. He hailed from a Marathi-speaking Chitpavan Brahmin family. Phalke received training in acting and photography at Mumbai's Sir JJ School of Art. He furthered his skills by studying filmmaking in Germany.

Upon returning to India, he created "Raja Harishchandra," the nation's first feature-length silent film. His dedication to cinema earned him the honorary title of "Father of Indian Cinema."

In honor of his pioneering contributions, the Indian government established the Dada Saheb Phalke Award in 1969. This award serves as a tribute to his invaluable dedication and commitment to the world of cinema.
