"33 U.S. states are taking Meta Platforms Inc. to court. They're saying that Meta's social media platforms like Instagram and Facebook harm young people's mental health because they're addictive. The lawsuit claims that Meta intentionally made these platforms addictive and collected data from kids under 13 without their parents' permission, which goes against the law.
Studies have found that using Meta's social media platforms can lead to problems like depression, anxiety, trouble sleeping, and getting in the way of education and daily life.
This lawsuit comes after Meta's own research in 2021 showed that Instagram, which they own, can make things worse for teenagers, especially girls. In that study, some teen girls said that Instagram made them feel worse about thoughts of suicide and eating disorders.
Meta is responding to the lawsuit by saying they've already introduced more than 30 tools to help teenagers and their families."
